Frequently asked questions

What type of residential project can an architectural technologist work on?

A professional technologist can draw up the plans for any single-family home that has an area of less than 600 square meters (6,458 square feet). If your project exceeds this scope, you’ll need to hire an architect instead.

What’s the difference between an architect and a technologist?

The main difference is in the level of education and skills acquired. A professional technologist has college-level training in architectural technique and is a member of the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ). An architect has a university degree; a proven track record as an intern with an experienced architect for 2 years; is subject to an admission exam to validate their skills; must complete 40 hours of compulsory training in each 2-year cycle of practice, and is also a member of a professional order, the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ).

Is it possible to make your own plans?

Even if you possess technical drawing skills, it’s not recommended to draw up your own plans. These projects are often not accepted by municipalities and it’s very difficult to find a technologist or an architect who will agree to work from these plans and then affix their seal. Thus you may have to start over from scratch after you’ve already spent considerable time on the drawings.
