This family did not know what to do with their home. Should they sell it and buy a new one? Or, expand the existing one? There were so many options available to them, they were not sure what to do. Yet, they knew they wanted to stay close to family. When the idea of a second storey addition – to convert the house into a bi-generation home –  came to mind, they knew this was what they would do.

With budget in mind, converting a 40′ x 25′ bungalow into a two storey home was not without its challenges. The ground floor walls had to be reinforced in order to support the weight of the new addition; and the preliminary renovations (i.e. reinforcements) allowed the family to add 3 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a contemporary bathroom to their home. Vinyl siding was also added to three sides. As for the housefront, the original brick was conserved – allowing for some substantial savings.

Undoing an existing roof and keeping intact roof trusses, installing new floor joists, soundproofing with blown wool insulation, building a staircase out of treated wood to access the new independent side entrance accessing the top floor, and creating floor divisions were only some of the many tasks our Verified Contractors had to accomplish for this addition.

Following the architect‘s plans and governmental construction & safety codes allowed this renovation project to become a reality. This second storey addition has allowed the Gilbert-Poulin to have new fully-functional home with a greater resale value.
